An overview on Snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi) biology

Authors

Abstract:

The Snow trout, Schizothorax zarudnyi Nikolskii, 1897 belongs to Cyprinidae family, endemic to Hamoun Lake, Sistan, Iran. Female fish mature at 4 years old, a few at 3 years old, and male fish at 3 years old, and live in the rivers and lagoons of Hamoon (stagnant waters) and spawn in the same place. Natural fish populations have declined during the last several years because of environmental degradation due to drought and the introduction of non-endemic fishes to Hamoun Lake. Artificial breeding is an option to preserve and restore Sistan snow trout stocks. Given the successful breeding of this fish in recent years and the susceptibility of this endemic species to breeding, acquisition of its farming biotechnology, while restocking this valuable fish in the country, by entering the aquaculture sector of the region and the country, will increase the diversity of farmed species, provide part of the protein needed by the people and create employment.

Blood biochemistry fluctuations as influenced by feed provision in juvenile Snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi)

This study aimed at determining blood biochemical parameters with potential diagnostic value to assess the nutritional status for healthy Snow trout, Schizothorax zarudnyi. For this purpose, three treatment groups of Snow trout (average weight, 65.9±5.3 g) were kept unfed for 24 h, 7 and 14 days. During the experiment, a natural photoperiod was adopted, water temperature was maintained at 23.2±...

Spawning Latency Period in Hormonal Induced Reproduction of Snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi (Nikolskii, 1897))

Background: The breeding performance is an important parameter to evaluate the breeding success in captive condition. The optimum hormone dose in combination with latency period is desirable for getting best breeding performance in fish. Objectives: <span style="color: win...

Changes in metabolic enzymes levels exposed to zinc and cadmium in the snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi)

Nowadays, the entrance of pollutants including heavy metals in environment threatens the life of aquatic animals. In this study, the effect of zinc chloride (6 mg/l) and cadmium chloride (5 mg/l) exposure were studied on the activity of some metabolic enzymes in the liver, gills, brain and muscle in Snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi). The results showed that zinc caused a significant increase i...

The effects of feeding rates on growth performance, feed conversion efficiency and body composition of juvenile snow trout, Schizothorax zarudnyi

This study was performed to investigate the effects of feeding rates on growth performance, feed conversion and body composition of juvenile snow trout (Schizothorax zarudnyi). For this purpose, fish with an initial body weight of 2.17±0.1 g were fed a commercial diet (40% protein, 3.8 Kcal g-1 diet) at five ration sizes of 2%, 4%, 6%, 8% and 10% of their body weight per day, for 60 days. The f...
